Working on a faux design brief for a course I’m enrolled in has me in all of the feels. I was just texting with my bestie about this, feeling like an imposter, not really an “artist” - All I do is doodle and image trace. I don’t “create” anything physical with pens or paints and canvases. However, I’m flexing my creative muscles and enjoying the gosh darn process. Isn’t that all that matters?
WHERE’S THE BRIEF?
Stacie B is the bomb dot com. She is my people. I am a proud member of her Creative Powerhouse Society and a Student in her Leverage Your Art 2022 class. This week in Module One, we are tasked with a Design Brief on Creative Typography: Creating a short word or letter with unique, creative typography for a coffee mug.
I was instantly excited, then frozen and overwhelmed with possibility, and then all I could think about was something floral a la Anthropologie style - Not that there's anything wrong with that! It’s just not The Willits Way. I needed to shake off my writer’s block and come back. I clocked into my day job to MAKE. THINGS. HAPPEN. And wrapped up the rest of my day.
LET THE (BIG) MAGIC HAPPEN
As I sat criss-cross applesauce in bed with the lights off watching Great News for the 1284863524th time, I collided head on with an idea just like Elizabeth Gilbert.* I wasn’t letting this baby go! Just earlier in the afternoon, I had created a sketch for that day job I was talking about. It was on my mind, the 3D geometric shapes… How can I turn that into a repeat? I pulled out my iPad and Procreate.
*Check out Big Magic! Highly recommend!**

On a new layer, I started filling in the shapes with those self-deprecating doodles that I mentioned before. It wasn’t a repeat that this called for, but rather some typography! I needed to let my mind wander in order to land in the right place for the design brief. What’s more artsy than that? I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more like a true artist. This creative baby is still in the messy middle, but making progress everyday. What brings you contentment and fulfillment everyday?
