Are you ready to create some amazing designs that will blow people's minds? Well, obvi! But wait (there's more!), before you dive headfirst into your next project, let's talk about some common design snafus that can sabotage your hard work. Don't worry, I've got your back! Here are four design mistakes that you should definitely avoid:
First up, big empty spaces! Don't leave a big empty space in your design. That's a no-no! Instead, make sure to balance out the positive and negative space, so your design feels complete and balanced.
Next, let's talk about train tracks. And I don't mean the likes of Thomas and his crew! I'm talking about visible seams or edges between each repeat of your pattern. Yikes! Don't let those pesky train tracks ruin your beautiful design. Instead, focus on creating seamless patterns that flow naturally from one repeat to the next.
Now, let's talk about repetitive motifs. We know repetition is a key element of surface pattern design, but be careful not to overdo it with the same motif (over and over and over... Well you get it). Spice things up by adding different types of flowers, shapes, etc or varying the scale.
Finally, let's talk about drawing at the wrong scale (i.e. drawing a motif that is too small or too large. So, before you start sketching away, consider the scale of the product that the design will be applied to and adjust the size of the motifs accordingly.
By avoiding these four design flubs, you'll be well on your way to creating designs that are visually stunning, seamless, and balanced. So, go ahead (with your bad self), let your creativity run wild, and show the world what you're made of! #fistbump
